Refrigerate Your Gels Immediately
Ensure your whitening gels are stored in your fridge throughout your whitening journey. This helps keep them cool and fresh. The same advice applies for any top-up gels you use in the future.
If your gels have been left outside the fridge for less than a week, don't worry. Simply ensure you refrigerate them as soon as possible.
When traveling, please use our icepack and bubble envelope to ensure the gels are kept temperature stabilised.
A Step-by-Step Guide
Common Mistakes To Avoid
1. Assume a standard 3 weeks course applies to everyone
The Enlighten System is a treatment, not just a product. The case must be assessed and then the treatment must be prescribed to make sure the outcome is optimised.
2. Overfill or underfill the trays
We understand it takes a day or two of adjusting as most people have different sized teeth, but as guidance, a lentil size is perfect.
3. Clean the trays with hot water
The trays are made from a mouldable material and although very durable, they will distort under hot water. It is very important to make sure you clean them with cold or luke-warm water.
4. Not refrigerate the gels (do not freeze)
It is highly important that you refrigerate as soon as you get home. If you must travel with them, make sure to include an ice pack.
5. Forget to whiten for a night or two
It's important to avoid skipping nights unless you experience severe sensitivity.
6. Not keep up the top-up regime
Your teeth should never go back to their initial shade, however, if you do not top them up, in time they will start accumulating stains and lose some of that brightness. It would be a shame after the time and investment in the whitening process. You only need one syringe per year and your teeth will stay pearly white forever!
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get top-up gel?
You can purchase a top-up whitening gel from your dentist who provided you with the Enlighten whitening treatment.
I’m experiencing sensitivity, how do I handle it?
Experiencing mild sensitivity (if any) is completely normal and it will stop as soon as you finish the treatment. Here’s how to manage it:
- Use the Enlighten Comfort desensitising pen every morning after whitening and brushing your teeth. Apply the gel to the part of the tooth closest to the gum. Lower front teeth are the priority. Hold lips away from the gel for 30 seconds to allow it to penetrate. Don’t brush your teeth for 4 hours after applying Enlighten Comfort.
- Use the Enlighten Serum toothpaste in the trays and leave for up to 1 hour at a different time than whitening. This contains a particle that is designed to help with sensitivity.
- In cases of extreme sensitivity we advise to contact your dentist and inform them of the situation. Depending on what the reason is, they may consider switching you to day time whitening, to lower concentration gel only, etc.
What is the whitening protocol if you clench your teeth (bruxism)?
If your dentist determines that you are a bruxist, they will advise you to switch your treatment from night to day. You'll be asked to wear your whitening trays for 2/3 hours during the day whilst awake.
I have some patchy areas, will they go away? Why is it happening?
Some teeth develop white patches during and shortly after the end of treatment.
A dehydrated tooth may exhibit a notably brighter, sometimes chalky white appearance. However, within a few days of concluding the treatment, saliva and dietary factors contribute to rehydration, stabilising the colour. This restoration to the natural state constitutes the genuine, final whitening outcome. Rarely, chalky areas which were present at the outset persist 2 weeks after the end of treatment. Speak to your dentist about minimally invasive solutions for this.
