How to Make Your Teeth Stronger and Whiter - 7 Proven Ways

Many people think that as long as you’re brushing your teeth regularly they’re then guaranteed to stay healthy and strong. Although that’s a major part of maintaining a healthy mouth, making sure they’re strong requires more than an external clean.

Your teeth are complex. They’re made up of many different parts. Each of which needs nurturing in a different way to ensure an all-round healthy set of teeth.

If you’ve been struggling with getting your teeth as white as you’d like or need extra tips on levelling up your oral hygiene routine — Enlighten can help.

In this guide, dental professional, Sanjay Patel, tells us seven proven ways to get stronger, healthier and whiter teeth.

7 Proven Ways for Stronger and Whiter Teeth

As mentioned, teeth are complicated. They require more than a quick clean to keep them in tip-top condition.

See below our 7 proven ways to get stronger and whiter teeth.

Eat the right food

The most important is to cut out sugar!

Just like the rest of your body, your teeth also need the right vitamins and minerals to maintain their strength and fight off infections. This means eating a tooth-friendly diet is critical to the long-term health of your mouth.

Some of the key vitamins and minerals to consider are:

Calcium: Helps maintain a strong enamel.

Vitamin C: Promotes healthy gums.

Potassium: Strengthens tooth enamel and helps to neutralise harmful acids in the mouth.

Phosphorus: Helps the body rebuild damaged tooth enamel.

To make sure you’re getting enough of these essential nutrients, there are many foods you can eat — in moderation of course — including:

-Milk

-Plain yoghurt

-Cheese

-Leafy greens like kale, collard greens, and spinach

-Calcium-fortified foods (Things like cereal, oranges and even sardines)

-Protein-rich food like meat, poultry, fish, and eggs

-Fruits and vegetables

In addition to a balanced diet, remember to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Water helps to wash away any bacteria that accumulate throughout the day and helps to stave off bad breath and a dry mouth.

Try to limit the consumption of coffee, tea, red wine and coloured soft drinks like Coke, Orangeade and other fizzy drinks. These culprits are known for staining your teeth, making it more difficult to maintain a bright white smile — even with extra brushing.

Brush with a Fluoride Toothpaste

Fluoride helps rebuild weakened enamel — the hard outer layer of teeth. It also protects against harmful acid from food and drinks chipping away at the enamel, which can exacerbate decay.

Although using toothpaste that doesn’t contain fluoride is OK, it doesn’t provide the same level of rejuvenation and protection as fluoride toothpaste.

Make sure you brush at least twice a day for two minutes each time. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush (preferably an electric toothbrush) and apply gentle pressure in circular motions to clean each tooth surface thoroughly without damaging enamel.

Perfect your Oral Care Routine

Brushing alone may not give you the strong, white teeth you’re looking for — it requires a whole routine.

Flossing removes plaque and food particles trapped between teeth that brushing alone can’t reach. Plaque buildup between teeth is a major cause of cavities and gum disease, both of which can weaken teeth and cause discolouration.

To properly floss, use about 18 inches of floss, winding it around your fingers and sliding it gently between each tooth. Curve the floss around each tooth in a C-shape and slide it up and down to remove debris.

If traditional flossing is uncomfortable, consider using a water flosser, which uses water pressure to clean between teeth, or floss picks designed to be gentler on gums.

Don’t forget to use a fluoride mouthwash to help remove those final stubborn bits of food for a fresher mouth.

Have Regular Dental Cleanings

Professional cleanings by a dentist or dental hygienist remove plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) that regular brushing and flossing can’t. Hygienists can also perform a deep clean in those hard-to-reach places.

Typically, you should look to see your hygienist every six months, although your dentist might recommend more frequent visits if you have specific issues such as gum disease or frequent tartar buildup.

Try using Sugar-Free Chewing Gum After Meals

Chewing some sugar-free gum can have surprising benefits for your teeth and your oral health.

Namely, it helps to clean the teeth and remove debris helping to grind away some residual particles and plaque in some of the harder-to-reach places around the molars.

Chewing gum has also been known to stimulate saliva production. Saliva helps to neutralise the acids in your mouth that are left over from meals and snacks, remineralise your mouth and help strengthen your teeth.

FAQs

1. Why Are My Teeth So Weak?

Your teeth may be weak for several reasons including:

-Tooth decay: Over time, acidity and bacteria can build up in your mouth which can slowly chip away at the enamel – causing weakness in the teeth.

-Abrasions: Bad habits like teeth grinding, chewing your fingernails and opening packages with your teeth can contribute to the wearing away of the enamel — resulting in weaker teeth.

-Diet: Over time, consuming high-sugar drinks and starchy foods erode the enamel without proper care.

-Dry mouth: If your salivary glands don’t produce enough saliva or you frequently have a dry mouth due to age — your teeth are more susceptible to demineralisation, weakening the enamel.

-Genetics: Sometimes, it’s not our fault. Some people are more genetically predisposed to thinner teeth and slightly weaker enamel.

2. Clean or Whiten? Which One to Choose & Why?

When it comes to improving your smile, it’s important to understand the difference between cleaning and whitening.

Visiting a hygienist for a professional cleaning will help get rid of the plaque and tartar buildup in hard-to-reach places while buffing and treating the teeth to give you a bright shine.
