Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about our whitening toothpaste
Can I use the toothpastes if I've never had whitening, and how do I use them?
Yes. Neither requires treatment, and both work as standalone daily toothpastes for anyone. Apply a pea-sized amount to a dry brush, don't wet it first, and brush for two minutes twice a day. With the Serum in particular, avoid rinsing heavily afterwards so the actives stay on your teeth.
Which toothpaste do I need, White or Serum?
White is for brightness. It lifts and repels surface stains and keeps teeth looking cleaner and brighter, so it's the one for daily use and for maintaining a whitening result. Serum is for comfort and repair. It calms sensitivity and micro-repairs enamel, so it's the one if you get twinges from hot, cold or sweet, or if you're preparing for whitening. If you want both, Duo Care pairs them: White in the morning, Serum at night. Both are complete fluoride toothpastes at 1305 ppm, so whichever you choose replaces your regular one rather than sitting alongside it.
Can I buy the Enlighten whitening kit here?
No, and this is the main reason people land on our site. Under UK regulations, the home kit and the individual syringes and gels can only be supplied by a dentist, not bought directly from us, because professional teeth whitening must be prescribed by a licensed dental professional. What you can buy here is the toothpaste range, Enlighten White, Enlighten Serum and Duo Care.
How do I actually get Enlighten whitening?
Book a consultation with a dentist who offers it. They assess whether you're suitable, take impressions, and order your custom trays from our lab. Use the Find a Dentist tool to locate your nearest provider.
Isn't the toothpaste the whitening treatment?
No, and it's the most common mix-up. Enlighten White lifts surface stains, which makes teeth look brighter, and helps maintain results after treatment, while the Serum addresses sensitivity. Neither targets the deeper discolouration that professional whitening treats. Head to the Treatments section if you are here for the whitening system.
What does it cost?
Price varies by practice, but it averages around £500 to £700 for the complete system, including the gels for the three weeks, your bespoke trays and toothpaste. Your dentist sets their own fee, so confirm at consultation. Many practices offer payment plans.
How long does treatment take?
If you are a standard case, three weeks. Your dentist makes custom-fitted trays which you wear overnight in weeks one and two, then for one hour a day in week three. Complex cases can take anywhere between 5 weeks and 3 months.
What results can I expect?
Enlighten guarantees a B1 shade in 98% of cases, and the three-week course suits around 95% of patients. B1 is the whitest shade on the standard dental shade guide.
Will it work on crowns, veneers or implants?
No. Restorations won't whiten the way natural teeth do. Some people choose to have them replaced afterwards to match their new shade. Your dentist will advise at consultation.
Do I have to change my diet?
No. Enlighten is designed to deliver results without lifestyle changes, and you can eat and drink normally during and after treatment, just not while the trays are actually in.
Will it make my teeth sensitive?
Mild sensitivity during treatment is normal and settles once you finish. Your kit includes the Comfort desensitising pen for targeted relief, and the Serum is used from two weeks before treatment as a desensitising measure.
How do I keep the results?
With simple maintenance, results can last indefinitely. Wearing your trays for one night every other month, and continuing to brush with Enlighten White, will prolong them. A top-up syringe from your dentist averages £60 or so and typically lasts 12 to 18 months.
